Millions to be made in Unbundling Reddit
Interesting ideas on how to unbundle subreddits and build software around them.
Hey.
My first Substack post. Nice, I am no longer a Substack virgin.
This post is all about things I came up with, learned, and remembered from My First Million podcast with Shaan Puri, Sam Parr, and Greg Isenberg himself.
They talked about unbundling Reddit — kind of the same thing that Airbnb or Tinder did with Craigslist.
TL;DR
What’s unbundling Reddit?
Taking one part of a bigger chunk and making a thing dedicated to that part.
It’s based on this simple idea — the sum of each individual subreddit’s market cap is bigger than market cap of Reddit as a whole.
People love communities. They have a strong need to belong somewhere. Reddit is a great place for communities to emerge. Same as craigslist. At some point, Reddit can’t satisfy all the needs of a certain group.
For example, Grailed was created because the needs of streetwear subreddit — shopping for streetwear — couldn’t be satisfied by Reddit. Now, you can just browse and shop on a nice-looking page instead of posting and searching links in the comments.
So that’s it — you take one part (subreddit) of a bigger chunk (Reddit) and make a thing (website/app) dedicated to that part.
5 bullet points:
There are $ millions to be made from unbundling Reddit.
Use redditlist.com to browse for popular subreddits
Become part of that group. Read the top 30-50 posts and see what people are talking about. What’s popular. What are their problems? How they behave. Read their usernames.
Make a simpler solution that would make their life easier (basically business 101)
… Profit
How was Discord born?
Discord is this cool piece of software that lets gamers communicate easier and looks much nicer than TeamSpeak. You don’t have to type IP address when you are trying to connect. It’s easy to setup. The whole experience is better. Even some companies use it instead of Slack.
Greg talks about how Discord started. First, they “pushed” Discord on the gaming subreddits — many of the subreddits used IRC back then. Later, they went after the CS:GO market with Discord. Since they are gamers themselves they speak the language that gamers do. And they have similar humor and slang. Shaan noted that Discord’s marketing is one of the best.
Skype could never do what Discord did. Because Microsoft is a biiiig corporation with a lot of suits, gamers wouldn’t go with their products. With an exception to their computers, games, and consoles. That’s kind of a big exception. I am not a gamer myself, but that’s how my friends feel. So, please correct me on this one if I am wrong. It would be like old people trying to sound cool around youngsters.
There actually isn’t a long version of TL;DR
So since I never want to disappoint you I will at least give you a comprehensive list of ideas the boys on the podcast or I came up with.
